History & Culture

Explore the parish’s rich heritage with a driving tour to view iconic historic homes – like the French colonial Parlange Plantation—an outstanding example of 19th – century architecture built along False River. Nearby, the Riverlake Historic Home offers insight into deep Louisiana roots and is tied to celebrated author Ernest Gaines (and the nearby Miss Jane Pittman Oak). View an ancient Indian Mound in Livonia, dating back to 700AD. You can also travel “Buddy Guy Way” checking out the historic markers about famed blues musician, Buddy Guy. Pair your historical drive with a stroll through New Roads’ charming Main Street, including the Julien Poydras Museum & Arts Center, the Mayberry-esque fueling station, or the awe-inspiring St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Make sure to stop at the Pointe Coupée Parish Museum and Visitor Center and shop until you drop at local boutiques but also locate that sought-after sideboard or silverware while traveling our antiques trail.

In Louisiana, we also express our culture through food. From the Spillway Café in Morganza to Morel’s Restaurant in New Roads, every location is a tasty bite of local flavor – with dishes often produced from generations-old recipes. You can also combine dining with a history when you stop in for a hot breakfast or daily lunch special at the Alma Plantation General Store & deli!

Come meander through the False River region of Pointe Coupee Parish, wandering like the banks of the Mississippi River that created our small slice of heavenly waterways, and soak in the culture and history to last until your next visit.
