Miss Jane Pittman Oak

Miss Jane Pittman Oak - A very old live oak in Lakeland, dating from a hundred years or more before the Civil War. Inspired the young author Ernest J. Gaines as he wrote one of his early short stores, "Just Like a Tree." Gaines says that the tree, and the character it inspired in the early short story, led directly to the title character of his most famous novel eight years later. Today the tree is known as the Miss Jane Pittman Oak.
